The defect causes halting of the system or major loss of data.  A significant number of test cases and testers have been affected and are unable to continue testing.

Major Defect

The defect prevents use of significant functionality.  The defect must be fixed before release.

Minor Defect

Testing can continue with conditions.

Cosmetic

The problem is visual in nature.
